"Gypsy
Wild and the Open Road" is the debut recording by Vancouver
singer/songwriter Brian denHertog recorded in Guelph, Ontario
by Scott Merritt and produced by Stephen Fearing.
The
11 song CD consists of 10 original songs (3 co-written with
Stephen Fearing) as well as a cover version of Junkhouse' "Burned
Out Car". It features a strong cast of Canadian Roots luminaries,
including Gary Craig (Jann Arden, Colin Linden) Jeff Bird (Cowboy
Junkies) Richard Bell (The Band) Willie P. Bennett, Suzie Vinnick
and Stephen Fearing.
Strong
songs and interesting arrangements make for an unusual and quirky
first release from this West Coast artist. Born to immigrant
parents in Montreal, Brian denHertog moved with his family to
British Columbia at an early age.
Brian has spent much of his life working and travelling on the
West Coast and has explored many corners of Western Canada.
Brian has worked as a labourer, carpenter, kayak guide and high
school teacher, as well as devoting time to following his creative
spirit. Furniture builder, jeweler, mask carver and musician,
Brian's first love is songwriting. Over the last twenty years
Brian has refined his writing and playing and followed his desire
to share his songs with others.
Crossing the boundaries of several musical genres, Brian's songs
are informed by a life of travelling and are filled with the
images of people and landscapes encountered along the way. Strange
characters, shadows and light, hope, despair and spiritual awakening
all reside in Brian's songs. As a songwriter, Brian takes a
craftsman's approach to refining his work, and feels that ultimately
his desire is to live life "for the sake of the song" and to
contribute to the vastly talented community of songwriters in
Canada. Brian denHertog currently resides in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
